About Our Data
Throughout this site, we try to be fully transparent about where we got our data and how we interpreted it. If you have questions about a number, feel free to ask us. Generally, we look at a campaign as being composed of several groups: the primary campaign committee; direct supporters; indirect supporters; and opposition groups. Direct supporters are usually (but not always) PACs. Indirect supporters are usually (but not always) superPACs. Opposition groups are usually (but not always) superPACs. Clicking on each group name will show you the group's official FEC information. Our data on expenditures is taken from the FEC. However, most of those expenditures are not organized into consistent categories. The Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) does an excellent job of sorting the expenditures into categories. The categories you see in Bailiwick are added to the FEC data by CRP.
