How the Totals Are Calculated
For many years, news organizations and other interested parties have had to calculate their own running totals of how much a candidate has raised. To assemble the totals you see here, we talked to experts about how they track official totals and dark money, and we made strategic decisions about what to display. Direct supporters are groups that have reported transaction types 18G, 18K, or 18L. Indirect supporters are groups that have reported transaction types 24C or 24K in support of a candidate. Opposition groups are groups that have reported transaction types 24C or 24K in support of a candidate. There are many other transaction types that we do not total at this time. In-kind donations, for example, are not reflected here. Because we look at only a subset of all the possible transaction types, the totals you see on Bailiwick may be slightly different than the totals you see at CRP or FEC.
